Common cooking range faults
The faults that bring us out most often, on gas and electric alike. Gas faults in particular are ones to act on rather than leave.
Burners will not light
On gas, usually a blocked jet, a worn ignition electrode or a gas-flow problem. Switch the cooker off at the supply and call, because a gas fault is not one to experiment with.
Weak or uneven flame
A partially blocked burner or injector. The flame runs low, yellow or uneven, and cooking suffers. It is a clean-and-adjust job for a technician, done safely.
Oven heats unevenly
One side browns while the other stays pale. Normally a failing element or a fan that is not circulating heat. A defined part, replaced once diagnosed.
Temperature is wrong
When the thermostat stops reading correctly, the oven runs hotter or cooler than the dial says, and baking is the first thing to suffer.
Ignition keeps clicking
The sparker continues after the burner has lit, or will not stop. Usually a worn switch or a wet or dirty electrode, and straightforward to put right.
An electric hob will not heat
The element, the switch behind the dial, or the control could be at fault. A technician narrows it down rather than you replacing parts on guesswork.
Gas work is a professional job. There is gas or high-voltage electricity involved, so leave it to a technician rather than a do-it-yourself attempt.
