It has stopped cooling
Start with the door seals, since a worn seal alone makes the temperature drift. If the seals are sound, it is usually the thermostat, the fan or the compressor, and that needs a technician.
It is freezing food it should not
A thermostat that has failed will run the compressor longer than it should and drop everything below temperature. It is a defined part and a straightforward replacement once diagnosed.
Water pooling inside or beneath
Almost always a blocked defrost drain. The water has nowhere to go and collects at the bottom or leaks out underneath. Clearing the drain fixes it.
The freezer is icing up
Ice building on the freezer floor or walls usually points back to the defrost system or a door that is not sealing. Both are fixable rather than fatal.
It is noisier than it used to be
A compressor that never switches off, or a new rattle, is worth looking at early. A fridge working harder than it should costs you in running costs and, eventually, in a bigger repair.
The ice maker has stopped
Usually the water inlet valve or the supply line rather than the ice maker itself. We check the whole path rather than replacing the visible part.
